Memory Warp: How the Myth of Repressed Memory Arose and Refuses to Die
By Mark Pendergrast. Publisher: Upper Access. Date: October 2017.
In Memory Warp, Mark Pendergrast sounds a clarion call to stop the ongoing pseudoscience of ‘repressed memory therapy’, which has destroyed millions of families and continues to do so. In the 1990s, Pendergrast’s book Victims of Memory helped to debunk the repressed memory craze. Now, two decades later, he revisits the subject and proves that this form of “therapy” is still widespread, still destroying family relationships and causing false allegations of terrible crimes against innocent parents and caregivers. With meticulous research and captivating writing, Pendergrast brings coverage of this issue up to date as of late 2017.

“Today many people believe that “recovered memory therapy” is a past aberration of the mental-health establishment, one that fueled the moral panic over sexual abuse in the 1990s and then subsided. But as Mark Pendergrast shows with new research and other evidence in this impressive, meticulously documented volume, far too many therapists never abandoned the mistaken belief that trauma is “repressed,” and, under the national radar, they continue using methods that create false and perniciously harmful memories in their clients. Memory Warp is essential, if scary, reading. It won’t allow us to forget.”
Carol Tavris, social psychologist, co-author, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me)
“Reading Memory Warp could save your finances, your sanity, your family, and even your life. If you seek mental health treatment in the US health care system, you are at serious risk of being harmed by reckless methods based on dangerous junk science theories and practices. Mark Pendergrast has written a compelling, well-researched book about the epidemic of false memories of abuse that occurred in the final part of the 20th century and continues in a reduced—though still dangerous—form to this day, negatively impacting the lives of millions of people.”
R Christopher Barden, PhD, JD, scientist-clinician-attorney-legislation and public policy expert specializing in multi-disciplinary analysis and reform.
“A brilliantly written, powerful, and meticulously documented exposé of the
contemporary recovered memory movement. Pendergrast demolishes the widespread myth that suggestive techniques designed to recover supposedly repressed memories – and the often devastating effects of these techniques on psychotherapy clients and their families — are a thing of the past. This extremely important book is a reminder that, in the words of William Faulkner, ‘The past is never dead. It’s not even past.’”

co-author, Facts and Fictions in Mental Health and other books
Thank goodness Pendergrast followed up with an updated book as well as the text version. I am ordering more for judges and universities. I hope other victimized parents will do the same. No university criminal justice class or psych class should be without this book. The related wrongful convictions continue as well as the abuse of the vulnerable children and adults. It is past time that law enforcement and the courts see how they have been used by illicit therapists who fraudulently feed off our kids. Send this book to your legislator and request policy changes to help stop the travesty. Surely we all know that the lazy and worthless state license boards have no intention of making their peers accountable;. They have done nothing for three decades. The self-righteously related self-serving therapists have been running the show for too long. They can believe in alters and dissociation and all the other propaganda that they have crammed down the judicial system’s throat all that they want to, but the victims and victimized parents of RMT and SRA, as well as those victimized by DID, need to take a stand and contact their legislators. The best thing that can come out of this book is for the courts to force the whacked-out therapists and guilty social workers to ‘dissociate’ from their license! This is WAR! I recommend that you contact your local and university libraries and fill out the form to request the book be purchased. It is easy to do. Northern Michigan University got the book on the shelf right away!
